As part of our partnership with WPRI, Channel 12, Michelle LaRiviere will be doing monthly segments as the Rhode Show Living Healthy expert on Hearing Loss. Today was her first show and she did a tremendous job! This contract with WPRI is our first leap into local TV and is increasing our brand recognition as well as generating tests! May is a great month to kick of this off being “Better Speech and Hearing Month.” In addition to being featured on the Rhode Show, we have commercials that air daily (in choice time slots that suit our demographic) and our own page on their site. This is already proving to be a great marketing avenue and partnership for us! Please watch how great Michelle did today below!

(January 9, 2013) Chicago, IL — Beltone, a leader in patient-focused hearing technology for over 70 years, has announced SmartRemote™—the first-ever app that allows hearing aid wearers to use their iPhone® as a “remote control” to discreetly adjust their hearing instruments. SmartRemote can be downloaded from the App Store℠ at no cost.

Beltone developed the SmartRemote app in response to what hearing aid wearers wanted most: a great listening experience in multiple environments, ease-of-use, and complete discretion.

Beltone’s award-winning 2.4 GHz wireless streaming technology underpins the new SmartRemote app. By pairing their hearing aids with the new Direct Phone Link 2 and the SmartRemote app on their iPhone, the hearing instrument wearer can use their iPhone to privately adjust hearing aid volume in one or both ears, change listening programs to match their environment, mute background noise during a phone conversation, and more.

“Beltone’s hearing aid innovations, such as our wirelessly-streaming Direct Phone Link 2, allow hearing-aided people to enjoy their electronic devices in new ways,” says Beltone President, Todd Murray. “And now, our new SmartRemote app gives our customers a superior listening experience combined with the convenience they desire.”

the United States, Asia, Brazil and Australia, where all but one study showed a link between hearing loss and diabetes.

The study showed people who have Diabetes are twice as likely to have a hearing loss. Plus, the risk of hearing loss is actually greater for people with the disease under the age of 60. It was found to be 2.61 times more likely in this age group, although right now researchers have no explanation why this is.
“It’s thought that high blood sugar levels brought on by diabetes may lead to hearing loss by damaging blood vessels in the ears”, says Chika Horikawa, Rd, MSc of Niigata University in Japan.

Researchers are unsure whether the disease itself or the medication used to treat it can cause hearing loss. Being proactive is vital when it comes to hearing loss. Be sure to include a hearing screening to your annual check-up.

According to study conclusions released September 2012, researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital discovered there may be a link between NSAID usage and hearing loss. A total of 62,261 women between the ages of 31 to 48 with baseline hearing were followed from 1995 to 2009 (14 years) and found that women who took ibuprofen or acetaminophen more than two days a week had an increased risk of hearing loss. This link also tended to be to be greater in women less than 50 years of age.

How much more at risk are women who use ibuprofen?

Women who took ibuprofen 6-7 days a week had a 24% increased risk of hearing loss, 21% increased risk when used 4-5 days a week and when used only 2-3 days a week the risk fell to 13%.

How much more at risk are women who use acetaminophen?

Women who took acetaminophen 4-5 days a week had a 21% increased risk of hearing loss, while those who used the medicine only 2-3 days a week the increased risk fell to 11%.

No link was found between aspirin and hearing loss.
